Choosing the Right Sport for Your Young Athlete: Tips for Parents

Oct 05, 2023

One of the most common dilemmas parents face is deciding which sport to encourage their child to focus on. It's a source of stress and uncertainty, especially for parents with multi-sport young athletes. To provide a solution, consider the factors of height, weight, speed, and personality when guiding your child's athletic journey if your goal is to help them become a college or pro athlete.

Here are two key tips to help you navigate this important decision:

  1. Focus by the End of 10th Grade: While being a multi-sport athlete offers many advantages, the modern sports world often requires specialization. By the end of the 10th grade, you should have a good idea of your child's height, weight, speed, and personality profile. Encourage them to prioritize their main sport after their sophomore year, allowing them two more seasons to impress coaches and develop their skills.
  2. Model the Elite: Every sport has a prototypical height, weight, speed, and personality profile at the elite level. Research and understand the athletic profile that best suits your young athlete. Watch college and pro games to identify athletes with similar characteristics. Resist the pressure from youth coaches who may push your child into positions that do not align with their athletic profile just to win.

While your young athlete can continue to enjoy other sports with friends during high school, it's essential to clarify which sport takes priority if the goal is college or professional sports. By considering these factors and making informed decisions, you can set your child on a path to success in the sport that aligns best with their physical attributes and personality.
